Vicars of Steyning 1278-2024
The Lost and Found Vicars of Steyning
13 October, meeting starts 5pm, talk 5:30pm (with interval); finishing by 7:45pm
Please save the date above, when the Friends of Steyning Parish Church will be holding their AGM, followed by a talk about The Lost and Found Vicars of Steyning. The story began during lockdown with the decision to update the board at the back of church showing the names of previous vicars, back to the 14th century.
A check by historian Sarah Leigh showed up many errors and inconsistencies – some were incorrect, some were missing (including one from 1278) and some weren’t actually vicars at all. A long search at the West Sussex Record Office and the National Archive, by Sarah Leigh and Chris Tod (former curator at Steyning Museum) aided by Christopher Whittick (former county archivist), Fr Mark and our own Dr Brian Hanson has now come up with the definitive list.
These five people will be telling the fascinating story of their research, accompanied by tales of these individuals from our church’s long existence.
