Bell Ringing A Truly English Pursuit

The bells of Steyning Parish Church

Bell ringing is a part of our national heritage, with origins dating back to the sixteenth century. There are over 30,000 ringers in the UK and about 5,500 towers, organised through the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers.

It is a great activity for people of all ages from around 12 years upwards, providing gentle physical and mental exercise. If you can ride a bicycle, you can probably ring a bell! It is also very sociable.

Our Tower

St Andrew’s and St Cuthman’s has a ring of eight bells with the heaviest weighing 12 hundredweight. Our aim is to ring every Sunday for the 9:30am service. By arrangement our bells are rung for weddings and other special occasions. What would Christmas be without bells?

We have an active band of ringers and our practice night is Thursday from 7:45pm until 9:15pm. We are a part of the Western District of the Sussex County Association of Change Ringers (SCACR) which arranges various activities, including visits and training sessions at local towers, and other social events.
