The stained glass in our church porch depicts St Cuthman, this time as an old man. It was commissioned through the Warham Guild, an association of artisans that had been founded in 1912 to make Anglo-Catholic church furnishings in a native English manner. The designer was Louis John Ginnett (1875-1946), a member of the Guild and
part of the craft community centred on the village of Ditchling, East
Sussex. The window was installed in 1948 and commemorates Helen Saumarez Smith who died in 1939. The scripture quoted at the top of the window uses phrases from
Psalm 65 as it appears in the Book of Common Prayer (verses 9a, 11b, 12a, 13b). History does not record how long the real Cuthman lived but we know that his
relics were transferred to France in Norman times.
