Choral Evensong
Choral Evensong tomorrow evening will be sung to the setting by John Sanders (1933-2003), with the canticles set in A Minor by Thomas Tertius Noble (1867-1953). The anthem, by John Rutter (born 1945), is ‘I will sing with the Spirit’ (1 Corinthians 14:15b).
Why not join us? – and perhaps bring a friend who might enjoy this beautiful choral service (which lasts for around 50 minutes). There is no sermon.
Lost Property
Have you lost a pair of spectacles or perhaps mislaid an umbrella? Recently a number of items have accumulated at the back of church, and more than the usual number of brollies in the umbrella stand by the main door. It seems the spectacles were left in a pew at last Sunday’s service too. If these belong to you, please speak to or send an email to the wardens.
Forthcoming Funerals & Memorial/Thanksgiving Services
- Funeral of Tony Smith: Thursday, 25 June at 2pm
- Memorial for Jane Marshall: Friday, 26 June at 12:30pm.
Rest eternal grant unto them O Lord:
And let light perpetual shine upon them.

Our series of lunchtime concerts continues this Tuesday. These concerts are free but with a retiring collection to towards the church building fund. They begin at 12:30pm and run for around 30 minutes. Please pick up a programme from church to pass on to friends and contacts and perhaps display in a suitable window:

Invitation to the Vicarage Garden – New Date
As previously advised, we have rescheduled the date for drinks after church in the Vicarage garden to follow the Music Group Eucharist on Sunday, 19 July. Soft drinks, sparkling wine and nibbles will be served. On that Sunday there will be no refreshments in church. For catering purposes, it will be helpful to know if you hope to attend. You can sign-up online here. There will also be a hard copy sign-up sheet at the back of church on Sunday mornings.
Visit from the Rector of Ramallah
Next month Steyning will be hosting a visit from the Rector of St Andrew’s in Ramallah on the West Bank, the historic home for many Palestinian Christians. A respected international voice, Fr Fadi has preached at Southwark Cathedral and will be attending next month’s General Synod in York as an ecumenical guest. He will also be welcomed as a special guest at the Methodist Conference. In our July magazine you can read more about Fr Fadi in the context of the current situation in the Holy Land. Over the first weekend in July there will be two opportunities to hear from him:
- On Saturday, 4 July from 8:15pm to 10pm, will be speaking at a public meeting in the Steyning Centre on the theme: ‘Peace in the Middle East: an impossible dream?’
- On Sunday 5 July 9:30am at our Sung Eucharist, instead of a sermon, Fr Fadi will be interviewed about what it means to be a Christian today in the land of Christ’s birth, what the Christian community is doing to survive and work for peace in the Holy Land. The service will be followed by a Q&A session in church.
A collection will be taken for Friends of the Holy Land on both occasions (and there is no need to book in advance). This promises to be a rare opportunity to hear an inspiring Christian voice from the Holy Land, from a context of war and great tension. Fr Fadi is increasingly seen at home and abroad as a figure who speaks for peace and justice for all in the Holy Land.
In Memory of David Boyle and Martin Toomey
Members of our congregation will remember David and Martin and will be interested to know of a current crowd-funding campaign to increase access to the land managed by the Steyning Downland Scheme through the purchase of an all-terrain accessibility vehicle to enable those who can no longer walk up to the Downs to continue to access this beautiful landscape. To find out more and make a financial contribution please visit Access For All to the beautiful Steyning Downland Scheme (SDS).

This informal service is growing in popularity and provides a friendly, joyful and inclusive space for worship. If the weather is inclement the service will take place in the church porch.

Choral Evensong next Sunday evening will be sung to the setting by John Sanders (1933-2003), with the canticles set in A Minor by Thomas Tertius Noble (1867-1953). The anthem, by John Rutter (born 1945), is ‘I will sing with the Spirit’ (1 Corinthians 14:15b).

Family Camp Next Weekend
Because the Music Group will be accompanying the services at Family Camp, our third-Sunday Eucharist will use a similar format, and forward altar as usual, accompanied by Brian on the piano. The camp itself will make full use of Gary’s organisational skills and takes place once again in Stedham in the South Downs National Park over next weekend, 19 to 21 June. The programme is primarily designed with primary-school age children and their families in mind. Click here for more information and to book – or speak to Gary as soon as possible.
