St Andrew was one of the first of Jesus’ disciples (see Mark 1:16-20 and John 1:35-42). This stained-glass window, in our north aisle, was introduced in 1909 and is one of those made in the workshops of Jones and Willis. The firm’s name can be seen at the bottom, in the opening in the centre of the interlocking arcade. All the Romanesque arches shown have zigzag decoration that would appear to be inspired by the twelfth century arches at Steyning. The window depicts our patron saint as an old man, holding the diagonal cross on which, according to tradition, he was crucified. His cross is also depicted in the stained-glass quatrefoil above our east window. Click the adjacent image to enlarge the photograph
