We recently announced a consultation exercise about how we might grow our engagement with families and children and we would love to hear your comments and ideas, or those of any younger family members you might put in touch with us. This is part of our preparation – following generous financial support from our congregation – to recruit a Families & Children Worker this autumn. Thanks to all who completed a post-it note for the board in church; the comments are now being analysed. If you still want to contribute, it’s not too late; you can email your ideas c/o the parish office. And see page 13 of the September magazine for an update on our plans.

We are honoured to be hosting another Steyning Bookshop event, this time with Sebastian Faulks, who will be speaking about his latest novel, The Seventh Son, said to be his most ambitious work to date, a gripping literary thriller which examines what it means to be human, by way of surrogacy, ethics, and power.
September 27th, 7.30pm (doors open 7pm).
Sebastian Faulks is the author of Charlotte Gray, Birdsong, Engleby, Human Traces, and Snow Country, to name but a few of his acclaimed, award-winning novels.
Sebastian will be in conversation with novelist, academic, and creative writing tutor Suzanne Joinson, we will also have a few copies of her novel The Photographer’s Wife on sale. Sebastian and Suzanne will be happy to sign books at the end.

Growing the Household of Faith
We are now coming to the end of our involvement in Chichester Diocese’s church growth programme, ‘Great is thy Faithfulness’, also known as ‘Growing the Household of Faith’.
As one of eight parishes chosen by the Bishop and the diocesan Department for Apostolic Life, Steyning Parish Church has been working in close collaboration with St Mary & St James in Littlehampton, under the direction of Canon Jack Dunn, Canon Precentor of Chichester Cathedral.
The programme has been challenging at times, but has been highly beneficial in helping us discover ways in which we can increase our outreach and be more involved, more welcoming and more inclusive, without major changes to our already successful formula of combining traditional and more modern styles of worship.
You may have noticed some small changes already – there will be more to follow as the PCC, clergy and Churchwardens put into practice the insights we have gained.
The most important message we have received is the power of prayer – please pray with us to help deepen our own faith and bring it to more people, throughout the whole community.

Supporting our Ukranian Friends
Like many churches, St Andrew’s and St Cuthman’s decided last year to set up a fund to support refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine. Crucial to this were the generous offers of accommodation from some of our congregation, as well as the financial support which enabled us to build up a five-figure sum. We have been truly humbled by the resilience and faith shown by the families we have helped so far. Not least, they have enhanced our own church family and enabled us to resume children’s worship. We now have two families who have found their own houses and jobs enabling them to support themselves with the help of the local authorities. And as some find their independence, we welcome others.

Fr Peter Attwood joins our team
Fr Peter Attwood, having recived his PTO (permission to Officiate), is joining our Honorary Clergy. His first ‘duty’ with us will be the 11.30am Eucharist on Wednesday 21 June.

Fr Peter Attwood joins our team
Fr Peter Attwood, having recived his PTO (permission to Officiate), is joining our Honorary Clergy. His first ‘duty’ with us will be the 11.30am Eucharist on Wednesday 21 June.
He worked in banking before his ordination. Before retirement, Fr Peter was Priest-in-Charge of four churches on Exmoor, and subsequently helped out in a six-church benefice in Somerset. He and his wife Sue live in Upper Beeding, where they moved to be close to their family members. As well as being a keen golfer and follower of other sports, Fr Peter sings with Shoreham Oratorio Choir. Fr Peter looks forward to meeting the Steyning congregation. Our former Ordinand, Caroline Armitage, was ordained as a priest by Bishop Ruth, the Bishop of Horsham, at St Mary’s Horsham on Saturday 3 June.
Caroline celebrated her first Eucharists on Sunday 4 June in her parish,

Our former Ordinand, Caroline Armitage, was ordained as a priest by Bishop Ruth, the Bishop of Horsham, at St Mary’s Horsham on Saturday 3 June.
Caroline celebrated her first Eucharists on Sunday 4 June in her parish, first at St Michael’s Partridge Green, and afterwards at St George’s West Grinstead. Our Fr Mark preached at both of those services.
